Well, they came and they dug, and dug and dug until basically our ENTIRE yard was torn apart. They dug for a day in the front before they figured out that the sewer pipe was coming out of the back so they then dug up our back yard and side yard to fix the pipe. The plumbers left it a mess! Huge piles of dirt everywhere that they said had to "settle" and debris in the dirt. Here are some before and after pictures so you can visualize just how bad this yard was....we affectionately referred to ourselves as the "misfits" of our neighborhood...Since we have moved in we have had a backhoe in our yard for several different reasons at least 4 times.

So fast forward six months and winter has passed and we know we can no longer hope the snow "hides" the dirt mounds and they have sunk to a level that just wasn't safe for anyone. Plus, we have a little boy who needs a yard to play in..this was not suitable. As many of you know in December I was laid off from my job. It has been tough for our little family..financially, mentally, emotionally and paying a landscaper another $1100 to fix this mess really wasn't what we wanted to do, but knew we HAD to do. Thankfully we got a nice tax return so we knew we wouldn't have to go into more credit card debt to fix this problem.
A few weeks ago, I come home from food shopping one day and low and behold our neighbor two doors down is having their sewer pipe fixed too. Alex is at the age where he LOVES big trucks and just loves watching them. So I take him outside to watch the plumbers and the truck. Well, the sewer inspector saw me sitting outside and well...the yard was pretty hard to miss, so he came up to me and like others; asked me what happened. So I tell him the story and he I can see he is getting madder and madder. He said that the plumbers should not have left the yard this way and that they basically did a crappy job (no pun intended). He asks if he can take pictures for his portfolio and I say yes and he gives me a one year service contract for free as a "thank you" for letting him take pictures. I really thought that was the end of that discussion and we would never hear from them again.
Two days later I get home from an interview and I get a message from the sewer inspector. He told our story to the owners of the plumbers and they felt really bad about what happened and about what we went through and as a welcome to the neighborhood they wanted to come out and fix our yard FOR FREE! I couldn't believe it! Things like this just don't happen in today's day and age. I started to cry...even though it is something so small (for us it wasn't) just the fact that these plumbers wanted to help us in a situation that was very stressful for Henry and I and that $1100 could then go into savings in case I don't find a job when my unemployment runs out...was HUGE! So last week they showed up..backhoe and all...and fixed our yard. Here are some pictures of our newly graded and seeded yard...it took them ALL day and they did this for free!

Henry and I are very excited to get out into our yard now and plant some pretty flowers and really make our former disaster of a front yard into a beautiful yard where people won't stare and where Alex can run and play! We already can see little shoots of bright green grass coming up through the straw!
I have to give a HUGE shout out and THANK YOU to Horizon Plumbing and Heating for taking the time out of your schedule to come and fix our yard. I can't tell you how much this means to us!

What a great story! That's just proof that God takes care of the little things (or not so little), too! It IS a nice looking yard. I know what a HUGE blessing even that much money can be. Congrats!
