Our Eventful Trip to the Supermarket

This past Sunday I took Alexi to the grocery store with me because Henry was hanging our new screen door (the one that came with the house was busted on move in day) and I wanted time with my baby. Being back at work as definatley gone more smoothly than I expected, but I am still having a hard time feeling like I get enough quality time with him on nights and weekends.

So anyway, I decided to take him to the store with me. I thought it would be fun and a way to interact with him and it would get us out of the house. I also thought I was smart in going to the grocery store on a Sunday morning as everyone would be at church..I thought I was being pretty canny.

Um, yeah. The supermarket was MOBBED. I mean, fend for your life, defensive cart driving, if you don't move out of the way you will get run over by a cart mobbed. Seriously, I think there should be a cart driving class offered on how to drive your cart in aisles, proper parking of your cart in aisles and proper cart driving etiquette for end of aisle turning and looking. Anyway, I digress.

I finally made it from the door to the produce section where I was deep in contemplation over whether I should get Alexi the organic carrots for his next introduction or the regular carrots ( I went with the organic BTW) when this lady, who I have never seen before, comes up to my cart and starts touching my baby! She starts rambling about how incredibly cold she is and how she thinks my "little itty bitty baby" must be freezing and she STARTS TOUCHING MY SON. Now, I am all for introducing Alexi to new people and what not, but when a random stranger comes over and touches my son, without asking my permission, um yeah, we have a problem. I saw red. I was so stunned into shock that by the time I could muster a reply or a reprimand she was on her way holding herself muttering about how cold she was. Now, there is proper baby etiquette and she obviously missed that class. You don't just go touching other people's baby's without permission.

I had barely gotten over that shock when I get smacked from behind from someone trying to get to the potatoes. So I mosey along, still fuming inside and get the rest of my produce. Next stop deli counter. I pull up to the deli counter and get my number and am waiting patiently for my order to be called. I start seeing all these people turning their heads and I hear them saying "oh what a cute baby" and I know they are talking about Alexi becuase they are looking directly at us. I start talking to this one woman, who also comments about how cute he is, but doesn't touch him (she is a grandmother so she knows the proper baby etiquette) and we start talking babies. Suddenly this man runs up with a watermelon and trys to steal her cart....the woman did not back down and sent the watermelon man on his miffed way. So I get my order and turn to leave when the deli person saw Alexi. Then she started cooing and oohing and aahhing over him. She asked how old and when I said he was 5 1/2 months she started going on and on about how big he is. I was like, um..OK he is actually below the 5th percentile in weight, but if you think he is big, then I will go with you..I find this is something not worth arguing with people. I continue on my way.

I am in the cereal aisle when I pass this lady who is trying to pick out some sort of cereal. We start talking..I can't remember exactly how it started, but we exchange plesantries and both continue on our way. Wouldn't you know it, she comes back to my cart for "one more little look at the baby" and continues to oohh and ahh over the baby. Thankfully Alexi was in good form that day and was all smiles and tolerated all the attention very well. Now, I am all for everyone telling me how adorable my son is, but by this point I was starting to get a little frustrated. I just wanted to get the rest of my food and go home. Thankfully Alexi must have been worn out by his public and he decided to fall asleep in the cart so he didn't draw too much more attention.

Two hours later I was able to actually check out and make it home. But I mean, how could you NOT love this face?

Whatever you do, DON'T put a hat on him. He is completely adorable, (just like my son, I must say :) and if you put a hat on him, ALL you hear forever is, 'What a cute baby! Look at that hat!'
